The Freight Yard hosted one of the first raves in New York, Masquerave, on Halloween of 1992, and it set off a firestorm. New York became a hub for the underground gatherings, and drugs became an integral part of the event. According to promoter Steve Lewis, ecstasy was literally fed to the partiers while they were dancing. This prompted former Mayor Rudy Giuliani to take action against the raves, and this significantly decreased the size of the parties.
