Kayak - Ruthless Queen TROS Top 50 - TopPop

Dutch popgroup Kayak was founded in 1972 by Ton Scherpenzeel (keyboards), Pim Koopman (drums), Max Werner (vocals), Jean Michel Marion (bass guitar) and Johan Slager (guitar). Later Marion was replaced by Cees van Leeuwen. In 1978 Edward Reekers, who had been a fan of the group for years, became the new singer. Peter Scherpenzeel (Ton’s brother and former roadie of the band) became the new bassist and two background singers were also hired: Irene Linders (pop journalist and partner of Ton Scherpenzeel) and Katherine Lapthorn (partner of Peter Scherpenzeel). The result was a huge success with the album ’Phantom of the night’ and especially with the single ’Ruthless Queen’ which reached #6 in the Dutch top-40.
