With rain rates exceeding 2 inches per hour in large portions of western Spain, residents are scrambling for shelter while authorities take urgent measures to mitigate risks. Spain’s civil protection service has specifically instructed the nearly 10,000 residents of Alcanar to evacuate to higher ground, as reported by El Pais. Regions like Andalusia, Castilla y León, Catalonia, and Valencia have been issued the highest level of weather warning, the orange alert, under Spain’s three-tiered alert system. Madrid is under a red notice, marking it as the second most severe weather alert. Mayor José Luis Martínez-Almeida of Madrid took to social media to announce reinforced emergency and security measures, urging residents to stay indoors due to the “exceptional and anomalous situation“ where existing rainfall records are likely to be shattered. The mayor of Toledo, Carlos Velazquez, located about 36 miles from Madrid, seconded this warning, urging residents to exercise maximum caution. Early on Sunday, the city of Malaga was under a yellow alert but expected to experience heavier rain later in the day. The storm is predicted to bring not only record-breaking rain but also gusts of winds up to 62mph and cooler temperatures across various Spanish tourist hotspots. The Canary Islands are expected to be the only region spared from the storm’s impact. Coastal regions from Barcelona to Valencia, along with the Balearic Islands, are also under high alert. Despite avoiding the worst of the weather, places like Majorca and Ibiza are preparing for significant downpours and potential flooding scenarios. This shift from tropical summer to cooler, rainy weather is not uncommon for Spain and is often referred to as “Gota Fría“ or “Cold Drop,“ particularly occurring in late summer or early autumn. Severe weather is not new to the region; just last weekend, a cruise ship collided with an oil tanker amid gale-force winds off Majorca, resulting in injuries and extensive delays for holidaymakers.
