When exercising, the master holds a fiery red iron block in his left hand and places it on the anvil to beat with a small hammer in his right hand; the apprentice standing opposite, under the command of the master’s hammer, raises a large hammer in order to beat it. Beat until the iron material turns from red to dark, and then put it back into the furnace to burn red, and so on, and finally forge iron tools of different sizes and curvatures, such as hoes, knives and other simple tools. After forming, it is red hot again, immersed in a pool to cool, or buried in slag ash to cool naturally. Finally, it is polished with a whetstone for sharpness.
