Turkey earthquake: Over 1,300 dead after powerful 7.8 magnitude tremor
More than 1,300 people have been killed after a massive 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck south-east Turkey and northern Syria in the early hours of Monday morning.
The earthquake struck early in the morning, while most people were sleeping. Hundreds of buildings were completely destroyed, with tremors felt as far as Cyprus and Egypt, prompting Italy to issue a tsunami alert for coastal populations.
The epicentre for the quake was in the Turkish city of Gaziantep, with much of the devastation around the border region where hundreds of thousands of refugees from the Syrian civil war reside.
