Salve Regina - Gregorian Chant (Latin + English)

About the chant: This beautiful chant has been within the Catholic church for centuries, it is traditionally ascribed to the eleventh-century German monk Hermann of Reichenau, however it is often regarded as anonymous by most musicologists. Beside being a popular chant amongst the faithful often used during Holy Mass as a hymn. In the past it was also very popular amongst sailors. Salve Regina, which translates to ’Hail Holy Queen’, came to be part of the ritual for the blessing of a ship. While the anthem figured largely in liturgical and in general Catholic devotion, it was especially dear to sailors. This chant is also the last prayer recited when praying the ’Rosary’. About the painting: The painting used in the background is the ’Coronation of the Virgin’ by Diego Velázquez. It was probably commissioned for the oratory of the court of Elisabeth of France, queen consort to Philip IV of Spain in 1641-1644. ------ Latin Lyrics ----- Salve Regina, m
