It was the 139th rally in the World Rally Championship organized by the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA). The start and finish took place in Nairobi. The Peugeot team, which saw their series of successes come to a temporary end here, had a difficult course of the rally, in which Ari Vatanen and Bruno Saby retired and Timo Salonen came no further than seventh place, while Audi and Lancia also failed. Local driver Mike Kirkland rounded out the podium for Nissan.
