PANTHER vs M4A3E2 SHERMAN JUMBO | 75mm Armour Penetration Simulation
The simulation presents the Panther’s 75mm armour piercing round impacting the uppger glacis of the Sherman Jumbo assault tank, from ~550m.
The Sherman Jumbo was an assault tank modification of the Sherman, with additional armour on the hull and turret. On the upper glacis, this took the form of an additional Rolled Homogenous Armour (RHA) plate being welded ontop of the main armour. For the simulation, the main armour has been modelled with a hardness of 240BHN, with the applique plate being 275BHN, with low elongation. No information on the applique plate’s hardness could be found, except for penetration test images, in which, the add-on plate doesn’t seem as ductile as the normal Sherman armour, hence the approximation of 275BHN:
The projectile was modelled with progressive hardness (upto 650BHN at the nose). Apparently there were US trials which showed the round could penetrate 132mm RHA @45°, at 962m/s, without breaking apart. At 47°, at 853m/s, this approximately translates to 105-110mm of RHA penetration (DeMarre). This is close to the simulation results of ~100mm under the same conditions, however the differences may be due to the 132mm plate being softer, the applique plate being more effective, or due to the material model itself.
