There are multiple clues about his role in this world, such as the rare colourless ominous NPCs, his lab entry 17 describing his next experiment, his connection to Sans, and his own room where you can meet him in person. Much of it is a product of speculation, ’cuz we can’t know anything for sure. What I’m going to say right now is just my personal theory, it might be wrong, keep this in mind! W.D. Gaster used to work as a royal scientist, who studied the time and space fabric. Sans was probably his assistant/follower.
