Romansh vs Romanian vs Italian vs French | Can they understand each other?

The Romansh language is one of four national languages of Switzerland, among German, Italian and French. In this video we test mutual intelligibility of Romansh and other Romance languages. Romansh is sometimes grouped by linguists with Ladin and Friulian as the Rhaeto-Romance languages, though this is disputed. What’s your impression? How much were you able to understand? The dialect that Leander represents is Sursilvan. It’s s a group of dialects of the Romansh language spoken in the Swiss district of Surselva. It is the most widely spoken variety of Romansh. The most closely related variety is Sutsilvan, which is spoken in the area located to the east of the district.
