In the summer of 1981, three young Leningrad musicians, Tsoi, Rybin, and Valinsky, who knew each other through the music underground, formed a band. They did a few kvartirniks—illegal gigs held at apartments, a phenomenon of that period of time—but soon the drummer, Valinsky, left his friends due to military service. In 1982, Tsoi and Rybin gave their duo a sonorous name, “KINO,“ which means “The Movies“ in Russian, and then joined a newly formed Leningrad Rock Club to be able to play for a larger audience. The most influential underground musician in the city, Boris Grebenschikov, suggested the guys record their songs and offered his bandmates’ assistance to compensate for the lack of a rhythm section. Together, they went to audio engineer Tropillo’s studio, but the sound turned out to be raw, unpolished, and far from Tsoi’s expectations. “I was embarrassed to listen to it, but now, in retrospect, I see Boris was right that the record would do its work,“ he later remembered. Indeed, the album didn’t go unnoticed and quickly found its audience.
