A brand new version of Woodstock 1969. Remade, re-edited and remastered in 4K. This new version is superior to the old in every way. To start with, I used the audio from the Woodstock 50th Anniversary Edition CD release which has been remastered by Prof. Stoned. It’s a lot better sounding than the old version. On the old edit, I stretched the audio around to fit the footage which would do the job of syncing the audio, but would hurt the overall quality. This time around, I have left the audio untouched to remain at the correct speed for the whole show while still keeping the quality. For the black and white footage, I have used AI upscaling and frame interpolation to greatly improve the quality and bring the footage up to a smooth 60fps. I think it looks way better.
For the various proshots, I’ve ripped the Blu-ray versions whenever available rather than the DVD’s for a huge upgrade in quality. The DVD versions not only ran at the wrong speed making the songs too fast, but also suffered from a ghosting effect because the footage was being played back at instead of the intended . Now with the Blu-ray versions, I can let the footage play at the correct speed and in its original frame rate of . The only footage from a DVD source is the extra footage used on My Generation because that particular version was only ever released on the “Woodstock Diaries“ DVD in 2002. Everything else is from the Blu-ray releases of “The Kids Are Alright“ and “Woodstock“ the film and bonus features.
Like last time, I’ve added in a countdown timer whenever there wasn’t any footage available. Since the camera mixing on every version of Woodstock isn’t that good (incorrect shot and cameras being out of sync) I had to cut up every single camera shot individually on all the different versions and one by one correctly resyncing them all to the new remastered audio. The only song with no footage in Shakin’ All Over. For the black and white footage, it would play back at various speeds throughout making it quite a challenge to get it all synced up properly but I think it’s pretty much spot on now.
I have fixed the beginning of Heaven & Hell which now includes more footage of the intro than the old edit. I added in a new bit of footage on Sparks at (15:10) of Roger banging his tambourines together which wasn’t in the original edit. Removed a section of incorrect John footage which is now in the correct place at (29:51) on the left side. On We’re Not Gonna Take It, the first bit of footage was in the wrong spot, I found the correct section just a little bit later at (41:36) and put it side by side with the other cam. See Me Feel Me has quite a few differences in the overall edit of the cameras. This new edit is a little more cleaned up with a few extra bits of footage added in and one incorrect shot removed that I replaced with another angle. My Generation has a couple very small extra shots added in and for Pete’s solo at the end of the show, I opted for just 2 cameras this time instead of the 3 on the old edit. Now its only the footage from the Blu-ray for a more cohesive edit.
There are two main things missing from this video. The proshot footage of Summertime Blues from the “Woodstock“ Movie and the black and white footage of Sparks, Pinball Wizard and See Me Feel Me. For Summertime Blues, YouTube just simply won’t let me upload this video with it included. It gets blocked every time. However YouTube doesn’t seem to care when it’s used in its own separate video. So I actually made a re-edit of Summertime Blues, removing the incorrect shots and syncing it all up better with the remastered audio. You can watch that here:
As for the extra black and white footage I couldn’t include because of the proshot footage used in its place, I’ve uploaded that as it’s own separate video also. One of the best things about this footage is you can actually see Pete kick the director of the Woodstock film, Michael Wadleigh off the stage as he was filming a little too close for Pete’s liking during Sparks. It happens at (18:14) on this video, but the cameras don’t really catch much of it. I used AI upscaling and frame interpolated on this too for the best quality. You can watch that here:
