Ten Years and Counting (1974) Public Service Messages from The New Mexico Civil Liberties Union by filmmaker Godfrey Reggio Godfrey Reggio was born in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1940. At age 14, he joined the Christian Brothers, a Roman Catholic pontifical order. He spent the next 14 years of his life in fasting, silence, and prayer, training to be a friar. During his time with the order, Godfrey Reggio co-founded La Clinica de la Gente, a facility that provided medical care to people living in Santa Fe, and La Gente, a community organizing project in New Mexico’s barrios. In 1963, he co-founded Young Citizens for Action, a community organization project that helped young street gang members. After he left the order, in 1972, he co-founded the Institute for Regional Education in Santa Fe, a non-profit foundation focused on media development, the arts, community organization and research.
