He argued that America, together with its allies, such as Britain, have placed Syria in an economic vice to keep the country weakened and impoverished. Dr Marcus cited three reasons as to why the Americans have placed Syria in an economic vice: Firstly, a weakened and impoverished Syria could enable the Americans, the Turks, and Al-Qaeda, who are illegally occupying parts of northern Syria, to instigate, in the future, another uprising against the Syrian Government; secondly, a weakened and impoverished Syria could inhibit Russia’s ability to use the country as a springboard for projecting Russian influence and power across the rest of West Asia; and thirdly, in the context of the war in Ukraine, a weakened and impoverished Syria could compel Russia to subsidise Syria even further, jeopardising the Kremlin’s ability to sustain its military campaign in Ukraine.
