Rachmaninov Elegie in E flat minor Op 3 No 1 Wang

After attending performances of Bach by Andras Schiff and Beethoven by Leif Ove Andsnes at Disney Hall,I traveled down to Orange County to hear Yuja Wang in a recital presented at the Renee and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall. Her recital included compositions by Prokofiev, Chopin, Kapustan and Stravinsky. The program opened with Prokofiev’s Sonata No 3 in A minor. I will be first in line to buy her recording of this sonata having played it at my graduate recital 52 years ago. Wang’s performance was ,the Chopin group which followed ,appeared to me to be on auto pilot; The nocturne in c minor certainly got Wang’s attention when she reached the octaves in the middle section. The recital ended in a blaze of virtuosity with the playing of Stravinsky’s “Three Movements from Petrushka.“
