Over the last year I have been recording music that has influenced me, and the one style I haven’t covered so far is metal. When I first heard Metallica’s landmark album And Justice For All when it came out in 1988 I was blown away, I had never heard anything like it! The great musicianship combined with complex yet melodic songs really appealed to me. The way that the songs are structured is quite different to your usual verse/chorus form and develops as it goes along, like a classical piece. Although it it also a very ’heavy’ album, the intricate arrangements and layering of parts make it sophisticated and rewarding, and a masterpiece of the genre. And Justice For All was a real gateway album for me and I went on to discover their other material and many other bands from then on. Although I went on to play mainly classical music, I still listen to this and other metal bands all these years later. The song To Live Is To Die is mostly instrumental and is almost 10 minutes long. In the middle there is an epic breakdown section where it cuts to one clean guitar then slowly builds up in layers to the big riff at the end. It is the last song with input from Cliff Burton, Metallica’s bassist who was killed in an accident in 1986, and it is dedicated to him. The band very rarely perform it live. This version takes the music from the breakdown and most of the ending, arranged for 4 mandoras. Generally one does the chords and riffs, one the bassline, one the melodies and one the harmonies. The mandora is a type of lute popular in the 18th and early 19th centuries, especially in Germany and Austria. This particular mandora is based on a Viennese model , when single strings were widely used.
