Former US president Barack Obama makes a surprise visit to Downing Street

Barack Obama, the former US president, made a surprise appearance in Westminster this afternoon as he arrived at Downing Street for a private meeting with Rishi Sunak. Mr Obama, who served in the White House from 2009 to 2017, smiled and waved at members of the press before he entered No 10 through the famous black door shortly after 3pm. The purpose of Mr Obama’s visit was not immediately clear but a No 10 source described it as an “informal” meeting.
