In 2021, at the B-Word crypto innovation conference, the billionaire talked about the subject. He stated during the conference, “I think modern nuclear power plants are safe contrary to what people may think,“ as reported by CNBC. “I really think it’s possible to make very, extremely safe nuclear.“ Even further, he disregarded the notion of creating fusion reactors, which would have harvested energy by combining rather than by dividing atoms. For many, the possibility of fusion energy making the ultimate renewable energy source without the inherent danger of a nuclear meltdown is what makes it so appealing. “I’m talking about fission,“ he clarified. “You don’t need fusion. You’ve got that big fusion reactor in the sky called the Sun. It comes up every day.“ It means that because solar panels already exist, why do we also need to build fusion reactors here on Earth? Given the increased interest in the field, this remark seems a bit out of the ordinary. These days, even Jeff Bezos, the billionaire founder of Amazon, contributes to the funding of fusion power projects. Likewise, Elon Musk referred to attempts to shut down nuclear power plants as “crazy“ and “madness“ multiple times in a lengthy interview that was published by Business Insider on March 26, 2022. Musk spoke with Mathias Döpfner, the CEO of Insider’s parent company, Axel Springer. In talking about the crisis in Ukraine and the reliance of Western Europe on Russian energy, Döpfner mentioned “strategic mistakes that Europe, particularly Germany, has made [such as] the dropout of nuclear energy in 2011.“ In response, Musk said, “It is very important that Germany will not shut down its nuclear power stations. I think this is extremely crazy.” “Is more nuclear energy the key to free ourselves from dictators and autocrats like Putin?” Döpfner then posed the question.“ In response, Musk said, “I want to be super clear. You should not only not shut down the nuclear power plants, but you should also reopen the ones that have already shut down. Those are the fastest to produce energy. It is crazy to shut down nuclear power plants now, especially if you are in a place where there are no natural disasters. If you are somewhere where severe earthquakes or tsunamis occur, it is more of a question mark.
