It was initially disliked by Shirelles lead singer Shirley Alston, who thought it was too “Country and Western“ for the group. However, producer Luther Dixon convinced her they could do it in their style, and asked songwriters Gerry Goffin and Carole King if they could add strings and turn it into an uptempo song, which they did. The song’s lyrics met with some resistance from radio stations, but it still went on to become a huge hit, selling over a million copies.
