After a brief period of dormancy, SpaceX’s Starbase has roared back to life! And for this time, we finally know the purpose of black sheep of the Starship prototypes: Ship 26! “Single-engine static fire demonstrating flight-like startup for a Starship deorbit burn“, the company wrote on X to explain about the latest S26 testing. For the most interesting moment, do you see this Mach diamond? Impressive, right? Ship 26 survived the test without visible issues and was safely depressurized and detanked soon after. The lone Raptor engine also appeared to perform perfectly and shut down cleanly after a stable four or five - second burn. At the cost of slightly less efficient combustion, Raptor 2 is designed to produce up to 230 tons (~510,000 lbf) of thrust – almost 25% more than Raptor 1 (185 tons or ~410,000 lbf). Anyway, the test might solve the mystery of S26 (no heat shields, flaps, etc.). It can be used to test fire or simulate different engine burn profiles. It will never fly but we may see lots of test fires on the ground. The term “deorbit burn“ refers to the controlled firing of a spacecraft’s engines to initiate its descent and reentry into Earth’s atmosphere. This critical maneuver is essential for safe and precise landings and is especially significant for missions returning from orbital or interplanetary destinations. SpaceX Naked Starship Firing!
