Hybridization of two termite invaders

This document explains the current situation of two invasive termite species in south Florida: Coptotermes formosanus and Coptotermes gestroi. A recent study by termite researchers from the University of Florida showed that both species are in the process of hybridization. Hybridization between two invader is rare. Heterospecific colonies have high hybrid vigor. Because both termite species are major economic pest, hybridization can result in increase economic impact in a a near future.
