Melted masonry? The Great Fire of Portland, Maine (1866 Photographs)

Howdy ya’ll. Many great fires struck the largest cities of America throughout the 19th century. In 1866 the largest fire up until that point in American history struck the city of Portland, Maine. Destroying most of the city, including nearly all factories, and over 1,800 homes, these photographs are said to have been taken in the hours directly after the fire, showcasing the extent of the damage. What we can see is fine masonry and extremely robust architecture being reduced to rubble, stonework seemingly melted, and a landscape which appears fully decimated.
