Reel 6. c 1924 Industries of British Guiana. Production of Bauxite - the ore from which aluminium is manufactured. Dense tropical forests must be removed before mining can begin. Trees are felled. Fires are lit. The “Three Friends“ mine about 60 miles away from Georgetown. Steam train with a man standing on the front moves towards the camera. Earth is tipped on to the railway embankment. Men clear the surface of the ore to remove any impurities. They work with picks. Explosives are put into the ground and the ground is blasted. The railway track is moved up to the face of the Bauxite and digging begins. Men are seen moving railway tracks. Train pushes carriages loaded with Bauxite. The smaller loads of Bauxite are tipped into larger containers. Factory at McKenzie City. We see McKenzie City from the river. Rotary drying kilns. The ore is heated. Shots inside the factory where the Bauxite is processed. A large cargo ship (The Christian Krohg) is loaded with Bauxite. See oth
