This color educational film, one in a series entitled “Wheat - The Staff of Life“ is about the milling of wheat. It was apparently made by the General Mills, Inc. corporation. Copyright is 1947. Directed by Rand Kellogg and Frederick R. Jones, the film was released by Simmel-Meservey.
Opening: WHEAT---THE STAFF OF LIFE (:07-:33). Title: The Milling of Wheat. A huge wheat processing facility, the General Mills factory in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Samples of wheat are ground in a small mill. Germ, bran, and starch are separated. Flour is tested by a technician. The protein in wheat, or gluten, is tested,. Sample loaves of bread are made. A baker makes dough. He puts it into an oven. Finished bread is cut in half (:34-2:43). Grain goes through the mill. Wheat goes through a separator. Wheat seeds are screened out. The wheat loses its rough impurities in a mill separator (2:44-4:15). Wheat flows, without seeds, in an aspirator. A row of magnets pick up pieces of metal, including nails, that accidentally fall into the wheat. Air blows wheat over vibrating screens. A worker walks by. Tempering is when the bran layer is toughed with steam. The machine is shown. Tempered bran. Machine moves (4:16-6:01). A man checks a mill machine. Wheat flows down through steel rollers, freeing starch from germ and bran. The effects of the first break is held in a man’s hand. Bolting claws help separate. A man looks over a machine (6:02-7:20). Purifying the flour is next. Air passes up through a purifier to help separate bran and dust. Vibrating screens sift the flour. Flour of different grades. Air blower furnish power to carry off bran dust. Reduction rolls are meant to make the flour very fine. A man checks the flour by hand. He opens a machine, flour falls. Gold Medal Flour is weighed and packaged in bags from a machine. Gold Medal Flour is bagged and goes down the assembly line. Bags are sealed and tipped (7:21-10:06). Flour bags fall down a chute onto a belt. Flour bags come down the belt, men grab them and load a railroad car. A train with its cars on the tracks(10:07-10:58). End credits (10:59-11:03).
