APFSDS FOR A 1940’s CANNON | T-55M vs CHIEFTAIN | 100mm 3BM20 Armour Penetration Simulation
The T-54 and T-55 are some of the longest serving tanks in history, and since the T-54’s introduction in the late-1940’s, it has received numerous upgrades. One of these was the introduction of Armour Piercing Fin Stabilised Discarding Sabot (APFSDS) projectiles in the 1970’s, such as 3BM20, shown here.
This projectile offered good penetration while using significantly less tungsten than its APDS predecessor, 3BM8. The hardened steel projectile is approximately 400mm long, with a tungsten carbide core at the tip. This breaks away during oblique penetration. Extra info on the round can be found on Tankograd. The Chieftain’s armour has been modelled as ~260BHN Cast Homogenous Armour (CHA) and its thickness is based on soviet measurements and ultrasound measurements.
