Moses’ apprentice, Joshua, with the people of Israel, entered the land that was still called the Land of Canaan, and conquered and turned that land into the Land of Israel (“Eretz Israel” in Hebrew), meaning to a unique desire (“Ratzon” in Hebrew) that is aimed at the Creator. Cultivating this land means that he turned a practically empty desire (note the connections of the words for “desire” [“Ratzon”] and “land” [“Eretz”]), i.e. a desert-like and wildland, into a land that is fit for a nation completely aspiring for the Creator. So Canaan would become Israel, a desire completely aimed at the Creator. Canaan means subordination to the selfish ego. The people who previously were under Moses, and who were then under Joshua’s leadership, would unite while aspiring toward the Creator, and by doing so they created the conditions for the revelation of the Creator in the humanity they wanted to create.
