Christened In Cider (1927)

Item title reads: “Christened In Cider! . Devonshire - our latest and fastest battle cruiser - launched by Lady Mildmay of Flete.“ Devonport, Devon Lady Mildmay stands on a platform near the stern of the ship, while clergymen in robes say prayers. M/S of a large crowd of ship workers, standing below and on the gangplank. Lady Mildmay breaks a cider bottle on the ship’s hull and then taps out a peg securing the chains holding the ship. The ship glides down the slipway, watched by the crowd. M/S of the ship with tugs and rowing boats around. Amendment February 2012: A visitor to the website has provided more information. HMS Devonshire was a County-class heavy cruiser. 1904 cider is used (the year the previous HMS Devonshire was launched). The clergyman is the Rev. L H Laidman, Chaplain of Devonshire dockyard.
