Groupers and big fishes. Part 10 of my DVD, “Reef Life of the Andaman“, available at or view the whole 2-hour video at This episode features groupers and the most common species of big bony fish to be found in the Andaman Sea. After an introduction to 2 small and common members of the grouper family, the blacktip grouper, Epinephelus fasciatus, and longfin grouper, Epinephelus quoyanus, we meet 2 of the biggest species, the brown-marbled grouper, Epinephelus fuscoguttatus, at Richelieu Rock in Thailand, and a friendly potato cod, Epinephelus tukula, at the Burma Banks in Myanmar. At the Similan Islands we then encounter the largest wrasse, the humphead wrasse, Cheilinus undulatus, sometimes known as the Napoleon wrasse, and the impressive green humphead parrotfish (bumphead parrotfish), Bolbometopon muricatum. We then take a look at the great barracuda, Sphyraena barracuda, in Burma
