Mein Vater war ein Wandersmann [German hiking song][instrumental]

This song is also known as “The Happy Wanderer“ (which is the translation of its alternative title “Der frohe Wanderer“) in English, the English version was created in 1953. The original German version was written by Florenz Friedrich Sigismund in 1847. Back then, it was a poem, but multiple componists came up with melodies later on, the first of them being Johann Michel Anding in 1876. The dominant melody of this song was composed by Friedrich Wilhelm Möller in 1949, the song was slowly fading in relevancy back then. The new version was originally meant to be a practice song for a newly founded children’s choir led by Möller’s sister, but they liked it so much that they stuck with it. By singing it, they won an international choir competition in Wales in 1953, broadcasted by the BBC. That’s how Welsh writer Dylan Thomas found it, falling in love with the “pigtailed angels“ from Germany. This choir is named “Schaumburger Märchensänger“ (Fairytale Singers from Schaumburg) and they regularly sing this song to this very day, including for TV shows. It basically is their trademark and they have been on multiple global tours with it already. They even were invited to the White House in 1972! The German original of the song made it to the 2nd place of the British charts, maintaining a Top 12 spot for 26 weeks. Not even 10 years after the war, this surely was no easy feat. Said popularity is what made English writer Antonia Ridge write an English version, which also made it to the charts under multiple artists. It also gained fame in the US, becoming the title melody of a TV show about travelling. Oh, and it was voted the most popular song of the Carnival Road March competition in Trinidad and Tobago in 1955, which is also the year a German movie named “Der fröhliche Wanderer“ came to theaters. The Schaumburger Märchensänger were directly involved in creating the movie, they also sing it there. Falleri und fallera. Mein Vater war ein Wandersmann, Und mir steckt’s auch im Blut; Drum wand’r’ ich froh solang ich kann Und schwenke meinen Hut. Falleri, fallera. Falleri, fallera-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha. Falleri, fallera. Und schwenke meinen Hut. Das Wandern schafft stets frische Lust, Erhält das Herz gesund. Frei atmet draußen meine Brust; Froh singet stets mein Mund. Falleri, fallera. Falleri, fallera-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha. Falleri, fallera. Froh singet stets mein Mund. Warum singt dir das Vögelein So freudevoll sein Lied? Weil’s nimmer hockt, landaus, landein, Durch andre Fluren zieht. Falleri, fallera. Falleri, fallera-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha. Falleri, fallera. Durch andre Fluren zieht. Drum trag ich’s Ränzlein und den Stab Weit in die Welt hinein Und werde bis ans kühle Grab Ein Wanderbursche sein. Falleri, fallera. Falleri, fallera-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha. Falleri, fallera. Ein Wanderbursche sein.
