“Tuesday, 11 July The 10th stage of the Tour starts in Vulcania, an educational amusement park in Saint-Ours-les-Roches. The riders ride 167.4 kilometres through the Massif Central and reach the finish in Issoire. The peloton crosses La Chaîne des Puys, and in this volcanic area the road is anything but flat. Right at the beginning, the route leads up the Col de la Moréno, a 4.8 kilometre climb with an average gradient of 4.7%. Then it descends to the foot of the second hill. This climbs at 5% for 7.8 kilometres. It is very likely that we will see an exciting fight for places in the breakaway group of the day. The road goes up and down the whole stage. The highest point is the Col de la Croix Saint-Robert, a pass at 1,451 metres, which the riders cross after 6 kilometres with a 6.3% gradient. From this point, there are still over 100 kilometres to ride. The route continues south via the Côte de Saint-Victor-la-Rivière (3 kilometres at 5.9%). After a series of uncategorised climbs, the road turns north again. The last climb is the Côte de la Chapelle-Marcousse. It climbs at 5.6% for 6.5 kilometres and the descent begins shortly after the mountain points are awarded. There are still 24 kilometres to go, almost all of which are downhill. The finish is in Issoire, which has hosted the Tour five times. The last time the finish line was there, however, was a while ago. In 1983, Frenchman Pierre Le Bigaut won the 14th stage there. The Critérium du Dauphiné was in Issoire only two years ago.
