Özdemir Erdoğan - Gurbet After over a decade of political collapse, in 1974 Greek-Cypriot nationalists toppled the Cypriot government, causing Turkey to invoke the treaty of guarantee to restore order to the island only a week later, landing troops on 21st July 1974. In only a few weeks of fighting they would take a third of the island and just under another decade later would declare the Republic of Northern Cyprus. It’s an odd experience seeing historical footage of tanks on exact spots I’ve stood.
