Here I present a series of photographs of the Islands of Slovski, nowadays more commonly referred to as Solovetsky Islands The archipeligo is located in Onega Bay of the White Sea.
Located on the main island is the famous Russian Orthoodox Solovetstky Monastery, founded in the late 15th century. Within a hundred years, the monastery had emerged as one of the most wealthies and influential religious centres in Russia.
After the October Revolution, the islands attained notoriety as the site of the first Soviet prison camp (gulag).[5] The camp was inaugurated in 1921, while Vladimir Lenin was still at the helm of Soviet Russia. It was closed in 1939, on the eve of World War II. By the beginning of the war, there was a naval cadet training camp for the Soviet Northern Fleet based here.
The Orthodox Church reestablished the monastery in 1992.......
