The small Russian town of Sasovo near Ryazan is neither a tourist magnet nor a newsmaker. However, in 2007 its name was put on the map by Galina Chuvina – a then 56-year-old retiree who had a meteoric rise to stardom from a coat check at the local pool to winning an international sporting event. On a whim, she joined a knife throwing club in her hometown and was competing with the best in mere months. A naturally hard worker, she pressed on and in less than a year started collecting serious trophies – national championships were followed by European and World competitions where she easily outperformed seasoned pros. In her heyday, “Baba Galya”, as her fans lovingly call her, was the media’s darling, but these days, the 65-year-old has all but retired from major sporting events.
