Beethoven Symphony No. 5 (1954) Furtwängler/Vienna

Ludwig van Beethoven Symphony No. 5 in C minor, Op. 67 1. Allegro con brio (0:07) 2. Andante con moto (8:43) 3. Allegro (20:05) 4. Allegro - presto (26:12) Wilhelm Furtwängler, conductor Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra Recorded on February 28/March 1, 1954 in the Grosser Saal Musikverein, Vienna This is the last time Furtwängler recorded the Fifth Symphony in the studio. He leaves us a respectable number of them, both live and in the studio. This one, produced by Walter Legge, was an effort to leave behind a high fidelity statement for future generations, much like the effort by Toscanini in the USA which was going on at the same time. As for how this fares in comparison with his other performances on record, it is really a matter of who you talk to. Many will cite his live performance with the Berlin Philharmonic during the War Years, others may choose earlier than that. The only thing all can agree upon is that Furtwängler’s Beethoven is the stuff of musical greatness. There are many conductors who did great things with Beethoven’s music, but none is more universally respected than Furtwängler, (With the possible exception of Toscanini); his Beethoven is legendary.
