Macron Defends Military Operations in Africa, Niger Authorises Mali-Burkina Faso Armed Intervention
Niger has authorized Mali and Burkina Faso’s armed forces to intervene on Nigerien territory in case of attack. The move is seen as Niger’s junta trying to keep the West-backed Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) at bay. Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron on August 24 called for a return to democratic order in Niger and demanded Bazoum’s release. Nigerian President Bola Tinubu met with Islamic clerics who have been negotiating with the Niger junta.
