Sergei Bortkiewicz - Lyrica Nova, Op. 59

“Lyrica Nova” is a set of four lyrical pieces by the exiled composer Sergei Bortkiewicz. The first and third pieces are shimmering and clear in timbre, with the first piece being especially melodious. The third contains a few references to the quartal chords characteristic of middle Scriabin. The second, as the sole minor piece in the set, has a dreary atmosphere. It is also the most harmonically adventurous as well, since it delves into a slew of foreign keys. The fourth contains, as its main texture, a host of towering chords. It is the shortest and most joyous piece.
