Conservatives call for criminal investigation into cancelled WE Charity contract | FULL

Conservative MP Pierre Poilievre on Friday said the Conservatives were calling for a police investigation into the now-cancelled WE Charity contract after it was revealed two members of Justin Trudeau’s family had been paid for speaking events for the organization. Poilievre said Trudeau “acted like a dictator and paid his friends.” The charity had originally been contracted to administer a $900-million federal grant program for students and recent graduates volunteering this summer amid the coronavirus pandemic. Conservative MP Michael Barrett explained why the party believes a criminal investigation is needed into the contract with the government, saying there were a few different areas of the “Frauds on the Government” section of the Criminal Code that could be looked at and that it would be up to police to determine whether the controversy was criminal. He also said the awarding of sole-source contracts should be rethought by any government.
