Russia - US Troops Join Peacekeeper Ceremony

American troops were officially welcomed to Russian soil on Thursday (1/9) at the official ceremony at the start of the joint “Peacekeeper 94“ military exercises at Totskoye, in the Volga region. But their presence was not welcomed by everyone. Communist hardliners demonstrating outside the military range on Friday confronted several U-S soldiers taking part in the exercises which are taking place during the next six days at the base. Activists of the Pro-Communist workers movement “Labour Moscow“ shouting anti-American slogans were waiting outside the military facility when a group of infantrymen came out to make a videotape and take photos of the demonstration. The soldiers are part of the 250 man contingent from the US Third Infantry Division based in Heidelberg, Germany participating in the exercises with 250 Russians from the 27th Peacekeeping Guards Infantry division.
