Sweet and Lovely - Lou Donaldson

From one of the greatest alto players of all time, comes this ultra-hip reading of the Gus Arnheim tune “Sweet and Lovely“. So many times, Lou Donaldson isn’t mentioned when the talk turns to the best-ever alto players. There is always mention of people like Johnny Hodges [swing] and Lee Konitz [bebop, cool], Ornette Coleman [free] and Sonny Stitt [hardbop], and Cannonball and, of course, Bird but Donaldson gets overlooked and that’s a damn shame. Here, he plays so pretty and blue that it just tugs at your heart. He is accompanied by some of the greatest players in jazz history so the tune is about as perfect as a tune can be. Lineup: Lou Donaldson - alto sax Wayne Shorter - tenor sax Jerry Dodgion - alto sax, flute Freddie Hubbard - trumpet Pepper Adams - baritone sax Garrett Brown - trombone McCoy Tyner - piano Ron Carter - bass Al Harewood - drums Duke Pearson - arranger
