First Photographs of Egypt; (1860-1898) by Adelphoi Zangaki, Cairo, Thebes, Luxor & More

Howdy ya’ll. Let’s get right back into the Old World series focusing on the oldest, the first ever photographs taken in Egypt. In part one we looked at the images taken by Hippolyte Arnoux. In the late 19th century, Arnoux is mentioned in litigation, which is now often cited to identify the first photographers of Egypt. Today we will look through the work of another mentioned in this litigation, possibly one of Arnoux’s protégés, focusing on the oldest known photographs of Egypt taken by the Zangaki Brothers. These images are dated from roughly 1860 through 1898. The Zangaki Brothers, their exact identity, and the precise technique used in these photographs is still relatively unknown. The high quality of these earliest images begs for a deeper dive. Please enjoy these images, save the photographs that stand out to you most, check out the first video in this series if you haven’t already, and be sure to share this video wherever possible.
