SOUL FOOD! “Spreadin ’Honey’ was originally the B-side of “Grits’ n Cornbread“ by “The Soul Runners“, an instrumental band from 103 Str. in Watts, a neighborhood in South Central Los Angeles. When it became a hit in October ’67, the group changed their name to “The Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band“ and it was released again as an A-side on the bigger Keymen label. It so became a hit in it’s own right. And what’s more, The Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band didn’t even record the song. Charles Wright cut the track with Bobby Womack, Leon Haywood, James Carmichael and others as the theme song for DJ Magnificent Montague’s radio show. No copyright infringement intended.
