Making a Historically Accurate Maleficent Cosplay II- the Hennin
It’s time to take on Maleficents headwear! I’ve chosen to go with the very distinct double hennin as my historical comparison to her horns. The designers for Sleeping Beauty clearly spent a great deal of time looking at imagery from the 14th and 15th centuries for inspiration, and Maleficents horns are no exception! The shape and style of her entire ensemble closely resembles the fashions of the early 15th c. While there were other large headdresses from that era available as well, the double hennin mirrors the horn shape so well, it just felt like the right choice.
For this week, I’m not only making the double hennin, but a veil to match as well. So, let’s take a look at some of the imagery of the era, do some research, and start to develop a better understanding of what may have been going on up there! What were they made out of? How were they decorated? And how did they stay on? It’s not like we have books on millinery from the 15th c just littered about!
