The Hungarian-born American conductor and composer, Antal Dorati (1906-1988) is best known today as a conductor. However, he wrote a number of orchestral and chamber compositions.
This recording of his Symphony No. 1 was made in April 1960 as part of the Mercury Living Presence sereis, shortly after the premiere with the same forces. For whatever reason, Universal has never reissued this performance on CD, although there is another recording that Dorati made with the Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra.
This first commercial recording never reissued on CD by Universal features the composer conducting the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra.
