Born in Mississippi but growing up in Chicago, premier 60s’ soul singer first released recordings as a member of the Impressions in the late 50s. His co-composition, “For Your Precious Love” became a #11 hit for the group in 1960, Jerry’s solo career was underway and he scored a #7 hit with “He Will Break Your Heart” that year. (This song became a #1 hit for Tony Orlando and Dawn when revived in 1974.) Many more hits followed on VJ (including duets with Betty Everett) and Mercury.
Jerry closed out 1960 with a double-sided Christmas 45, “Silent Night” / “O Holy Night”.
