First Printed Qur’an

Fr. Columba Stewart, Executive Director of HMML, describes the first printed Qu’ran. This printed Qur’an was printed in 1543 in Basel,Switzerland. During the 16th century there was growing tension between the Ottoman empire and Western Europe. It was printed in Latin with a preface from Martin Luther so that it may be used by Christians to disprove Islam.
