Hamas launch surprise attacks on Israel’s military in Gaza

Israel’s defence minister has outlined a plan for the future governance of Gaza that would mean Israel would retain overall security control, a multinational force would rebuild the devastated territory and responsibility for civilian matters would be handed to a Palestinian body. Yoav Gallant unveiled the skeleton of the “four-corner” plan, which would also give Egypt an unspecified role, after the first war cabinet meeting to address contentious postwar plans since the war on Hamas in Gaza began. Binyamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, had repeatedly deflected demands to discuss Gaza’s long-term governance, while far-right ministers prompted international outrage with calls for the mass resettlement of Palestinians elsewhere and for the return of Israeli settlers to the territory. Netanyahu has not publicly talked in any detail about how he thinks Gaza should be governed, nor has he rebuked his most extreme ministers for their suggestions.
