Visit Visit our website This travel film shot in 1958-1959, and then released in 1969 with some newly-shot footage added. It was produced by Viewpoints Inc. depicts two women’s journeys driving through Portugal presenting the country’s various tourist attractions, traditional ceremonies, festivals, and activities in Lisbon, Coimbra, Óbidos, Bragança, Santarém, and Tomar. The film was photographed and edited by a female team of filmmakers -- Lisa Chickering and Jeanne Porterfield, both of whom appear in the film on their journey through Portugal. “Portugal with Pleasure” is a shortened version of “Bravo Portugal!” released by Chickering and Porterfield in 1965. At the American Film Festival in New York in 1968, the short film received a Blue Ribbon. Volkswagen of America sponsored this version of the film after Chickering and Porterfield’s success. Opening scenes include different parts of the whole film. Amongst here are three boats sailing (00:00) and a sunny beach (00:17). A large bullfight arena with a full audience and horses riding (00:22) followed by children dancing in traditional dressing in a field (00:37). The busy beach of Nazaré shows local women in similar dressing carrying goods and trades on their heads (06:35). The women dry fish on racks in the sand on the Nazaré beach (). Different fights between men and bulls are taking place in the arena, such as a team working to get the bull to a complete standstill, and others dancing in pairs to avoid the bull (10:38). A different castle seven miles at sea is also functioning as an inn (12:31). The women are camping in the Volkswagen Transporter on a stretch of beach (). Fishermen wearing traditional dresses, sail in boats decorated with paintings () Different boats and fishermen sail to catch fish (14:49). Boats form a circle to trap tuna in a fishnet centered between the boats, and fishermen leap into the nets to kill tunas by hand (16:28). A river spanning between mountainsides covered in vineyards (17:21). A bridge to enter the city of Porto, the city of port wine (17:37). The women continue their journey to the new town (18:14). Locals dance and celebrate wearing traditional clothing in multiple styles and settings (18:23). A bride is married dressed in black and the family’s wealth in gold jewelry (19:25). The Volkswagen Transporter is set up for a wedding reception (20:02). Hundreds of Cowboys ride through town for the yearly fair (20:36). José, the ranch owner, shows how horses are trained for bullfighting (21:32). A bull is released into an arena to fight cowboys (24:14). The journey proceeds to Tomar, where women carry all kinds of goods and trades on their heads (25:34).
