Shinjuku Gyoen is one of Tokyo’s most famous gardens, but is so large you feel like you are no longer in Tokyo. See why here. Shinjuku Gyoen has 3 distinct gardens as well as many other places to explore. It is very large and takes time to see it all. If you are short of time, the best area by far is the traditional Japanese garden, including the famous Goryo-tei, which was done by Japanese in Taiwan for the Emperor in 1927 - which naturally has a distinctly Chinese appearance. In addition, there is a French garden with roses blooming in season, and an English landscape “garden“, which is just a large empty lawn. You can also find a sizable greenhouse, but it was so steamy and humid that my lens fogged up the instant I took off the lens cap, so there is little to show here. Shinjuku Gyoen has over 20,000 trees spread out over 58.3 ha (144 acres), including about 1500 cherry trees, and around 1700 plants in its greenhouse.
