“The Call of Cthulhu“ (1926) is one of the most famous horror stories by H.P. Lovecraft. As most of his works this one deals with the monster from the sea. Cthulhu is an ancient sea monster, which has body parts of octopus, dragon and human. It is covered with scales, endowed with a humanoid body and has a head with tentacles. It also has the ability to influence the human will, in particular – in the moments of sleeping. It lives at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean, wherefrom it rises “at the right position of Stars.“
The only truly movie adaptation of “Cthulhu“ was made by Lovecraft fans in 2005. The movie was made in silent cinema style to match the original story’s time period which was a very appropriate decision. Also the sets in dream sequences look exactly as in movies from the German Expressionism era (“The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari“, “The Golem“ etc.) which is even more reminiscent of silent cinema period.
