Most of the victims died from burns and some were killed with firearms. Seven were being treated last night at a hospital in the capital, Tegucigalpa, for gunshot and knife wounds. Xiomara Castro, the president, said the riot was planned by gangs known as “maras”. The head of the prison system, Julissa Villanueva, said the riot started because of recent attempts by the authorities to crack down on illicit activity inside prisons. She called the latest violence a reaction to moves “we are taking against organised crime”. For decades the mara gangs have operated across Central America as an alternative force to the state, funded by extortion, kidnapping and drug trafficking. Many prisons in Honduras, and across Latin America, are described as “self-governed”, with gangs setting their own rules. Guns, gambling and prostitution are commonplace. Often the only loose agreement with the authorities is that inmates do not escape.
